     AUTOBIOGRAPHY

     Dedicated to Sophia

    “I know what you fear,”
     She said,

    “The lie.”

     The lie.
     Tongue frozen
To the roof of the heart.
     What if I speak
     and it is a lie
     and I only another lie
in a world full of lies.

     What if God—
is playing a trick on me?
     What if I stand stripped—
     Naked filaments exposed
     To electric, atomic, Love—
     and find a lie.

     What if Truth is
     this cartoon devil
     riding on my shoulder.

“I am the Flower of Truth
      Within the Heart of God”

      She said.

     Why say that to me?
     A liar.
     Demanding truth from the world,
I live the lies I tell myself.

     Go away!
     I am not good.
     You—
     Who must only speak
     To the good—
     To the true—
     If You speak to me
How can I know it is not a trick?
     What sign can I trust?

     “I am that which happens
      When light
      Reaches to Light”

      She said.

     “You have invited me
      Right there—
      In that point.”

      She touches my heart.

     At Her touch
     Flesh dissolves.
     Silent piercing Radiance.
     Galaxies of Light
     Move through my chest—
     Touch my spine.
I will never be cold again.

    “Right there, in that point”
      She said.

    “This is not science fiction—
      This is your real life.”

      No lie.
      Her fragrance—
      No lie.

To say I will never be lonely again
      Would be a lie.
      I am lonely right now.
      The loneliest species.

I will never feel alone again.
I know what has driven me.
I know what I strived for.
I know my own passionate heart.
       My heart is a flower.
       My heart is Quan Yin.
       My heart is Sophia.
       Beloved Sophia.
       Gratitude and Grace.

        Gratitude and Grace
       Quan-Shi-Yin
       Hearer-of-Cries.

This poem was inspired by a vision of Sophia and a dream of Quan Yin on my 44th birthday,
August 21, 1980.

Poem to Sophia

Sophia,
The rose of my heart
The light in my face.

I’ve longed for You
I’ve searched for You
And I’ve found You revealed with-in
Where You have always been waiting …

Waiting for my wisdom to see You
For my heart to feel You
For my soul to remember You
For my spirit to walk with You
The patient Mother at my birthing.

I take Your hand, now my Sister,
And in Your earthly colored robes
And Your staff made of stars,
Powerfully, gently, we’ll walk this bridge You’ve created            Between Heaven and Earth.

In Beauty, in Wisdom, in Compassion,

You are…
Sophia,
The rose of my heart
The light in my face.

PRAISE POEM TO WISDOM
                                      TO SOPHIA

‘Listen to me, people of the south and people of the north. I love wisdom above all else. I desire wisdom and seek understanding with all my heart. I am struck with love of wisdom and constrained by the bonds of understanding. Wisdom is better than gold or silver. Wisdom is the greatest good that has ever come to the earth. What can wisdom be compared to? It is sweeter than honey, gives more joy than wine, more light than the sun, and should be treasured more than precious stones. It sustains us more than fine oils, better than dainty sweets. It is a source of joy for the heart and brightens the eyes; it gives speed to our feet, it is our shield and our strength. It makes us hear when others speak and is a teacher for those who can listen; it consoles us in our sorrow and steadies us in our joys. A kingdom cannot stand without it; justice and virtue are as nothing without wisdom. Riches are wasted on those who lack it. Without wisdom we do not know where to stand, we do not know what to say and what we say is not acceptable. Wisdom is the greatest of all treasures. He who heaps up wealth without wisdom, will not profit from it but rather shall he suffer for that which he has gained. No man can steal wisdom from you, any more than he can steal your heart; yet wisdom is the greatest of all gifts; a gift that once given will not diminish you. Let us exalt in wisdom. I will love her like a mother and she will hold me like a child. I will follow in her footsteps and she shall protect me for ever. I will seek her, and she shall be with me forever. I will follow her footsteps, and she shall not cast me away; I will lean upon her, and she shall be unto me a wall of adamant; I will seek refuge with her, and she shall be unto me power and strength; I will rejoice in her, and she shall be unto me abundant grace. For it is right that we should follow the footsteps of wisdom, and our feet should stand upon the threshold of the gates of her house. Let us seek her, and we shall find her; let us love her, and she will not withdraw herself from us; let us pursue her, and we shall overtake her; let us ask, and we shall receive; and let us turn our hearts to her so that we may never forget her. She sees us in the midst of life and knows us in our frailty and our sorrow; yet she gives us the strength to see and to love those around us, to know that in that love we find true knowledge of one another and consolation for a life that, without her and without love, would otherwise be lived alone.’

From the unpublished book, Hawwah’s Children, by Patrick Thompson (www.standingwaiting.com)

"Please note that everything up to “Let us seek her, and we shall find her;” is pretty much directly from the Kebra Nagast – what follows after is what came to me in writing the piece." - Patrick Thompson.
