SOPHIA TODAY
Much of Her story is about exile—Hers and our own.
It is not surprising that
there is a renewed interest in Sophia in the world today. The
patriarchal religions of the world have failed us. As a species,
with our collective spiritual history, we are now at war with
ourselves, with one another, and with the environment. People the
world over are searching for a better way, a way home, a peaceful
Tao of Wisdom. One of the first transmissions I received from Her
is: “I am Sophia and it is My Time.” Sophia is Wisdom and it is Her
time.
I
have had a general sense of the Presence of Sophia all my life. When
I was a child I used to see Her as very sparkling—like a brilliant
white fourth of July sparkler shining through a mist of brilliant
white radiance . This vision was accompanied by a sense of a
“presence” and specifically female. I called her my Shiny Lady and
in some way I associated her with my mother—my mother died when I
was 9 and after her death I often “saw” her standing by my bed and
then I would dream about seeing my “Shiny Lady”. As I moved into
adolescent misery, I moved on and forgot about Sophia until She
reappeared about 30 years ago. Since then I have received several
very specific ‘transmissions’ directly from Her and these came as
poetic praise poems and invocations to Her. I have also received
many very specific instructions from Her—some as Guidance for
students, often as Guidance for myself or information about the
state of the world or the state of Creation itself, some as pieces
of knowledge needed in the creation of a specific class in the
Course in Alchemy I was creating. She is always Present in our Superconscious meditations. The Real Magic Course itself was
inspired by Sophia. In this instance she referred to herself as the
Mother of Alchemy and you could say that she turned me on
to—inspired me to study—Hermes.
At
some point I realized that the inspiration coming through in the
praise poems and invocations were actually Her way of showing me and
inspiring me to help people access Her in the purest possible way.
As a child I never told anyone about Her and have always been very
reticent about sharing my experiences. For the past couple of years
I have been receiving a clear call that it is time to share my
experience of Sophia with others in a more literal way—for She is
the frequency that is lacking in the world. She is Light itself.
Now
I am filled with the desire to share these inspired writings with
you. First I would like to give a general sense of Who She Is.
Most of the information I have about Her came from Her transmissions
and it is difficult to find in books the particular sense of Her
that comes from this direct communication. I will just give you some
general facts as I know them from Her and from other people’s
experience of Her.
Sophia in the esoteric tradition—including Esoteric Christianity—is
the Feminine Christ. She is the Presence in the world of Divine
Wisdom, and of Divine Inspiration. Her Esoteric symbols are the
white Dove and the white Rose. In my first experiences of “seeing”
Her I would see these symbols of pure, breathtaking beauty. She is
Celestial White, the most radiant Light you can imagine and in Her
Superconscious aspect She is a radiant gold—sheets of gold and gold
mist. Literally breathtaking. The Beauty of God. And in some
traditions Her symbol is the Rainbow—the Goddess of Wealth, Divine
Intelligence, and Divine Creativity. Pure Bliss—the ecstasy of God.
She
is The Mother of Alchemy; transformation itself, through directly
realized knowledge. She is direct knowledge, She does
not work through prophets or teachers who translate Her wisdom—She
directs knowledge straight to the heart of each being who calls on
Her and allows them to experience knowledge as directly realized.
Self-realization is Her Province.
Yogananda in his experience of the Superconscious, refers to
superconsciousness as the province of Divine Wisdom and he often
refers to Divine Wisdom as She. Sophia is Divine Wisdom. At one
time, I had trouble distinguishing Her from the Superconscious until
I realized that the Superconscious is both the infinite Christ and
also the finite individual spark of Christ Consciousness
within each human being and that Sophia is the feminine aspect of
the infinite Christ Consciousness—and they are all one and the
same. She is the Word itself and can speak within all
hearts.
In
the Hindu and Tantric Buddhist teachings She is the Shakti—Kundalini—the
Feminine God-Force. She is the White Tara and I have often
experienced her in the form of Quan Yin—celestial, radiant and
serene. She is Isis—almost severe in the brilliancy of her Radiant,
Divine, Intelligence. I have experienced Her in many of the
feminine forms of Divinity but She is, to me, always Sophia, my
Beloved Friend and Teacher.
I
was once researching Teilard de Chardin and I came across this
lovely quotation. I don’t recall if he was speaking about Sophia but
he was speaking about his relationship with the feminine aspects of
God. It was one of those moments when a poem or a phrase speaks
directly to your heart. I have kept this with me always because to
me it is a poem to Sophia. It speaks to me through a full cycle from
my childhood when She was my “Shiny Lady” into my adulthood and my
rediscovery of Her as Divine Sophia.
“For there is a cry more humble and more
tender:
Hasten my Divine Sister to comfort my age.
Something in my breast is on fire to hear
you:
A slumbering childhood trembles in my
heart.
This time you will come when winter is here
and the briars:
The mountain has lost its array of
flowers,
But You will
bring me Your Divine Tidings.”

DIVINE SOPHIA ** WHO IS SHE?
“She is the
breath of God, the reflection of God’s glory.” The ancient Hebrews
believed that to look directly at the face of God would destroy the
personality and the personality had to stay intact for the creation
of life. So Sophia as God’s co-creator took God’s Light and
reflected it from Herself and passed it through the Ethers and as
She passed through each Vibration, form came into being and all of
Creation was born.
Sophia is a
Greek translation and literally means “wisdom”—in Hebrew as the
breath and spirit of God She is Ruah. As the spirit of
Creation She is Potentia (Latin). Potentia; the All.
“Sophia
is the Divine Mother, through Her all of creation is born and in Her
all of creation is renewed. Sophia is the feminine image of God, not
separate from but a unified Divine essence, one with the eternal
Holy Source.” I can’t remember—from a book on Alchemy.
“She is so pure
that she pervades and permeates all things.”
“She is so pure
because she was of One Intention and that One is Love which is the
highest transmission of Wisdom.” Transmission from Jesus
“God is the One
Source neither male nor female; Christ is the all-inclusive All;
Jesus was the male incarnate All; Mary Magdalene was the female
incarnate All—Sophia—the Word made flesh.” Transmission from
Jesus
Hindu—copied and collated from different Hindu sources as I was
doing research on the Tantric Dakinis:
"She is the Senge Dolma, the Lioness, a protector
to those who love Truth, merciless to those who abuse it.
She is the Scarlet Woman, the Fire of God,
the magnetic Shakti, the seductive and alluring Creative Potential
which is always, constantly, calling the Spirit onward in its’
longing for Self-Realization.
She is spiritual homesickness, the desire to
return to the Self, the Path of the Heart which requires that you
always go the distance and give all of yourself with no thought of
return.
As the Divine aspect of Femininity, She brings abundance and the
power of the miraculous, the evolved creative sense.”
Sophia provides women with an image of female Divinity that is not
based solely on reproduction and mothering. She is an aspect of the
Divine that is based on the intelligence and creative power of
higher consciousness.
She
is Western – venerated by the earliest Christians and by followers
of the Hermetic and Gnostic Paths—the Western Esoteric Tradition.
There are many books written about Her by men who are priests or who
are on distinct esoteric spiritual paths. Could this be because men
have more need to incorporate Her qualities of Wisdom and Mercy than
do women, and those men who have intuited this, must speak in Her
behalf?
“They” say She was exiled from the patriarchial religions because
Her teachings are rooted in life instead of in dogma and
intellectual or theoretical doctrine. Because She ‘hung out’ (like
Jesus) with women, in the market place, in politics, in courtrooms,
and in taverns, and because She speaks directly within each human
soul and does not require a go-between in the form of a priest or
ordained minister, Sophia became problematical and excluded from
orthodox monotheism.
In
the Hermetic approach to God, Sophia is the Radiant and
All-encompassing Light of Divine Knowledge; the Intelligence of God;
the Spark of Divinity within each human soul. It is this Spark of
Divinity that gives each human being access to Superconsciousness,
therefore, Sophia is the individual Christ Consciousness within each
of us and the feminine aspect of the Superconscious All.
